Author Note
Thank you for reading The Almost Queen, I hope you've enjoyed Gwen and Lancelot's story and will carry on to The Rightful King for Arthur and Dindrane's!
If you're new to the setting of Grimm Academy, then there are more books you can discover in two different series, Grimm Academy and Once Upon An Academy, which both follow fairy tale characters as they try to avoid their own prophecies (in other words, their fairy tales!) Writing in this world is so much fun, and the Fate Of The Crown duology is no different!
This is the first time I've ever taken on any of the Legends Of King Arthur, and I was honestly a little surprised when the idea came to me. I've known that the characters attended Grimm ever since I started writing books based at the Academy, but it wasn't until later that I realised they had a story. I remember reading some of the Legends of King Arthur when I was younger and thinking about how vivid and varied they are (much like the Legends of Robin Hood which I'm currently retelling in the Tales Of Clan Robbins series with L.A. Boruff). That does leave me with a little bit of being able to pick and choose which aspects to bring over into my own story, while leaving it open to artistic license.
The choice to not have a love triangle between Arthur, Gwen, and Lancelot was an easy one, as in my mind, the original stories suggest that there wasn't really one. And the fact that Lancelot and Gwen's affair led to Guinevere being burned and a war starting felt like the perfect way to slot in a prophecy.
There's also a lesser known Arthurian legend playing a role in this series. Dindrane is a real character from the legends, sometimes known as the Grail Maiden. I won't go into her legend now, as I want to save that for The Rightful King, but there was a reason I chose her. She is Percival's sister in the legends too.
None of my research has led me to a surname for Gwen, so I chose Olwen (Gwen's surname) after Culhwch and Olwen, one of the first versions of the Legends. It felt like it was the perfect surname for her to have!
I hope you enjoyed reading as much as I did writing, and I hope you join me for the next adventure!
